A Kentucky motor vehicle bill of sale confirms the legal purchase and sale transaction between a private buyer and seller of a vehicle. Most new owners will be required to show proof of purchase upon transferring the vehicle’s title and seeking to register the vehicle under their name. Therefore, a bill of sale alleviates the titling and registering process for the buyer and officially relinquishes the seller’s legal ownership.
Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form TC 96-5)– Required to complete the ownership transfer in tandem with the bill of sale.
- Registering a Vehicle
New owners must register their vehicle at a local County Clerk’s Office within fifteen (15) days after purchase or within 15 days of moving from a different state. Registrations expire annually, usually during the birth month of the registered owner. Owners may renew their registration online through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s online portal.
Where to Register
All documentation can be taken to a local County Clerk’s Office for the purpose of registering a vehicle.
